Property claims should be advised to your insurers in accordance with their own required procedures.

It is helpful if you keep receipts, guarantees, instruction manuals, valuations or photographs of your most valuable items in a safe place as these may help to support your claim.

If the incident involves theft or criminal damage, or if any property has been lost outside the home, you should inform the police immediately and make a note of the police incident number.

Insurers will usually ask for you to provide estimates (two for comparison purposes) or invoices for claims involving repair or replacement of items.

Insurers should be given an opportunity of inspecting the damage before permanent repairs are commenced. If this is not possible or in case of doubt, use of photographs of any damage/keeping damaged parts/items can prove to be most useful in processing your claim.

For all large claims, insurers will usually arrange for a claims adviser or loss adjuster to visit you as soon as possible.
