Group medical insurance

Group private medical insurance (PMI) is there to pay the costs of private medical treatment that an employee might require following unforeseen illness or injury. The core benefit is in-patient hospital care such as specialists and surgeons fees, theatre costs, accommodation, nursing care and post-operative costs. Additional benefits may include diagnostic consultations and tests, day care, out-patient treatment and recuperative treatment. There are also options for alternative medical treatments, psychiatric treatment, emergency dental care and cover for employees’ families.

Although PMI is not deemed an employee benefit in terms of tax treatment (premiums paid by the employer are taxed as a “benefit in kind”) it is widely regarded as valuable addition to an employment package and it has real benefits in ensuring employees receive prompt and effective treatment in the early stages of a medical condition.
